Weekly Wrap-up for July 8th, 2011

(‘Memories’ by Stephanie Kao, whose work is currently on view at Aviary)

As the clammy warmer weather settles into Boston, it has been nice to see many of you out at events around the city.

For example, last night was a Super Art Fight event sponsored by Vitamin Water at Fourth Wall Project.

The venue had great energy and was brimming with creative minds, sans pretension, just looking to have a good time.

Y’know, get DOWN. Cut a rug. Shimmy-shake. All that good stuff.

Let’s do more of that, okay?

July’s calendar is filling up with exciting things to do and this weekend is no exception.

It’s time.

Brutal Pyramid

(Prior work of Wesley Berg)

When: On view now through July 31st, 2011

Where: Aviary, 48 South Street, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts

How: Official Website

What/Why: “Brutal Pyramid is an exhibition of work exploring various aspects of animal behavior as well as a light survey of the modes in which individuals continue to depict them. It has perhaps been the longest-running and most popular deliberate form of visual subject matter on earth. Cultures from around the globe empathize with, exploit, and (literally) idolize certain members of the animal kingdom – even in pre-history, as we shared the same fight for survival, an animal could represent and conduit for the soul or a gift from the gods. Put plainly, we are deeply engaged with the enigmatic and human-like behaviors of creatures on the whole.

Each artist involved in the exhibition has approached the subject in his or her own unique way. In utilizing an array of animal forms, the artist’s have made efforts to convey otherwise ineffable thoughts and issues much like their artistic ancestors.”

Kodachrome: Prints from Slides

(Saint of Killers, prior work of Lee Kilpatrick)

When: On view now through July 30th, 2011

Opening Reception: Friday, July 8, 2011, 6 to 9 pm

Where: Washington Street Art Center, 321 Washington Street, Somerville, MA

How: Official Website

What/Why: “When the last Kodachrome film developer on the planet announced a final deadline of December 30, 2010, Somerville photographer Lee Kilpatrick sprang into action. In the last months of 2010, he gathered almost 60 rolls of slide film and rushed them by mail to Dwayne’s Photo in Kansas. “Kodachrome: Prints from Slides” features a fraction of the resulting candids and landscapes preserved in a rapidly disappearing medium.

“People often associate Kodachrome with either National Geographic photos of far-off lands, or photos of loved ones from days gone by,” says Kilpatrick. “Both of these themes worked their way unintentionally into this show.” Kilpatrick’s gleaming cityscapes of Kuala Lumpur and Boston contrast with bucolic landscapes of Maine. The heart of his work, however, continues to be people, including his family as well as strangers caught unaware in private moments.”
