Belated Happy New Year!

So, some of my Web Finds are compiled in a word doc over the week from links my twisted friends send me, others I stumble upon by chance.   I have a few different blogs/websites/go-to places I surf everyday but then I realized..I’m not the only one looking at these.  For example, the work of Tom Bagshaw(below) has been all over the internet this week!  Makes the web feel like a very small place.

Going forward, I am going to make a concerted effort to expand my virtual horizons.  I have a bookmark tab of hundreds of sites I neglect, and opened 30 tabs in my Chrome browser this morning.  My computer was thrilled.

Going outside of my normal perusing habits led to some different and interesting finds.

On a related note, I painted last night for the first time in awhile, and am hoping that this tiny shakeup might help in a small way to further inspire me and get me back in the swing of things.

It is hard to force creativity, and is a muscle that gets out of shape and doughy if you don’t flex it.  Much like a gym hiatus, it takes a little bit of a push to get going again. I mentioned on Twitter how I had to literally seduce myself last night to sit down and put brush to canvas.  Bottle of wine, candles, Erykah Badu, incense…it was real.

But I’m glad I sat in the quiet, feel energized today, and look forward to tinkering away at it more this weekend.

Pummel Vision

“Pummelvision flashes your life before your eyes using photos from around the web.”

Really neat concept and I love the music by Friendly Ghosts.  You can use your Facebook account, Flickr etc to literally watch yourself grow up over the course of a few minutes.

The Work of Fumi Mini Nakamura

(Your Secret is Safe With Us)

“I’ve been passionate about drawing since I was little. My mother was a seamstress, who shared the creative atmosphere and supported me all the time. I became more serious about drawing when I began my college years. I drew intensely everyday while going to school. I started my project : miniminiaturemouse in early 2004 and been active ever since.

I’ve done many exhibition all over the world along with many publications and apparel designs.

I would like to continue working hard and grow with miniminiaturemouse. “

Nerd Boyfriend

(The Look: Indiana Jones)

“Roxana Altamirano is the founder and editor of Nerd Boyfriend, a shopping guide that recreates the ensembles of iconic male stars, from Woody Allen to Carl Sagan. This year, she was a contributor to Details Magazine and Put This On, a web series for men about dressing like a grownup.  ”

The Work of Tom Bagshaw

(Saint Criminal)

“For his personal work he has developed a highly rendered digital painting style through which he explores themes of fantasy, beauty and mysticism. ‘Yokai Dreams’ is his first series created for a solo show and it masterfully demonstrates all the key qualities of his work which, while dealing with very imaginative content, aims for a strong level of realism in its presentation.

The darker, creepy elements in Bagshaw’s paintings are often balanced out with quirky or humorous details which are charming for the viewer to discover. While feminine beauty plays a large role in his work, the women he depicts are never frail damsels in distress. More often than not they’re strong, intriguing characters, with an air of mystery to them.”

The Work of Monica Cook

“Monica Cook paints beautiful and disturbing portraits of women. Her figures are brilliantly painted, with breathtaking skill; Cook excels in rendering the subtleties of the flesh and details of light, tone and surface. Painted with an eerie intensity, Cook’s figures compel the viewer to study them, often surreptitiously, as there is a strong sense of invading an extremely private moment. We look, albeit sideways, with fascination at the beauty, humanity and complexity of these portraits. The recent work includes drawings in ink on mylar as well as the canvas oil paintings. Additional figures, male and female, have been introduced into the imagery of previously single female figures in a neutral field, resulting in intensely mysterious, rich and tantalizing tableaux.”(writeup via Marcia Wood Gallery)

All 61 ads from Super Bowl XLV in 2 minutes

Great, wasn’t watching the Super Bowl anyway and now I don’t have to feel like I missed out on the 60+ commercials. Brilliant.

Ecstacy of Decay

“The first in a series of videos documenting the life of a mortuary professional as she sets out to revolutionize the death industry one corpse at a time. “

Cat Rabbit

“I am a Hobart based textile artist, currently working in Melbourne, who spends equal amounts of time sewing, drinking tea and thinking about owning a pug dog. My work has been exhibited in Australia and internationally and is stocked in various nice stores online and in real life.

All the work you find here is made by my little pudgy hands without a pattern. As a result of this, everything turns out differently.”

Love love her work, and her site, and I want it all. Hoarder.
